Vesicular Stomatitis is a reportable disease as per the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), meaning that horse owners must immediately report the presence of any horse suspected of being affected by the disease. The disease causes blister-like lesions to be formed on the inside of the mouth, nose and hooves, alongside flu-like symptoms and anorexia.

As a result of the outbreaks in Arizona, the CFIA has issued the following amendments to import and export policies for horses travelling from the United States to Canada, effective immediately until further notice:

A)   the importation of horses from the State of Arizona for all end-uses will be prohibited effective immediately (except for Canadian horses returning from Arizona (please see below), and;

B)   for horses coming from the US, for all end-uses, from all other states, the following requirement applies:

During the previous twenty-one (21) days, the animal(s) in this shipment has/have not been in the states of Arizona.

Wellington, Florida – The Canadian Show Jumping Team comprised of Tiffany Foster, Eric Lamaze, Ian Millar and Jonathon Millar placed second in the $100,000 CSIO4* Nations’ Cup, presented by Kingsland Equestrian, on Friday night, February 27, at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Florida.

A total of nine countries contested the $100,000 Nations’ Cup including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, France, Ireland, Mexico, the United States, and Venezuela. Canada entered as the defending champion, having celebrated its sixth victory in the Wellington Nations’ Cup in 2014.

At the end of the first round, Canada was sitting third with a total of eight faults. The United States led the way with a perfect score of zero. Such was their strength that the first three riders on course - Todd Minikus, Candice King and Margie Engle, all posted clear rounds, giving anchor rider McLain Ward the luxury of not having to jump. Venezuela, increasingly gaining strength on the world stage, was counting four faults for second position.

Wellington, Florida – Alexandra Crown and Victoria Colvin were both wearing SSG ‘Digital’ style riding gloves to earn $1,000 bonuses in the SSG Gloves “Go Clean for the Green” promotion running throughout the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL. Each week, bonus money is offered to the winner of the Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup, the High Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic, and the Sleepy P Ranch High Junior Jumper Classic if they are wearing SSG ‘Digital’ style riding gloves on their way to victory.

A tough track set by Steve Stephens greeted the 59 entries in the $15,000 SJHOF High Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic on Saturday morning, February 21. Only four riders were able to find their way to a clear round, with Alexandra Crown returning as the pathfinder in the jump-off. Another clear performance sealed the deal for Crown and her new mount, Von Cim, as none of the three who followed were able to stay fault-free.

“We wanted to do a neat, clear round and put pressure on everyone else and hope that it went my way today,” said Crown of her jump-off strategy with Von Cim, a 10-year-old Holsteiner mare she began riding approximately one month ago. “It was my first time jumping the Highs on this horse. She is perfect. She is so ready to win; she wants to win every class, and she tries so hard. I’m in love with her.”

Wellington, Florida – Both Kelsey Thatcher and Kira Kerkorian were wearing SSG ‘Digital’ riding gloves to earn $1,000 bonuses in the SSG Gloves “Go Clean for the Green” promotion running throughout the 12-week Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL.
Back-to-back bonuses were awarded in the $15,000 SJHOF High Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic and the $10,000 High Junior Jumper Classic, both held Sunday afternoon, February 15, in the DeNemethy Ring.   In the High Amateur-Owner Classic, six of the 38 entries advanced to the shortened jump-off track.  Thatcher proved that being the pathfinder was no problem for her and her mount, Everything, posting a clear round in a time of 36.75 seconds that would hold up for the win.
“His show name is Everything, and he is that,” said Thatcher of the 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding purchased three seasons ago from Ireland’s Cian O’Connor.  “He is a very aggressive horse.  I was able to do a children’s jumper turn, and he lands off of it and looks for the next jump.”

Second Careers for Racehorses: The Transition from Racetrack to Ribbons

Story by: Barbara Sheridan
Many ex-racehorses are finding second careers once their racing days are over, thanks to the ever increasing awareness of what these multi-talented athletes can also do off the track. As a result of this growing movement to retrain the racehorse, Thoroughbreds, Standardbreds and Quarter Horses have successfully been transitioning from the track to a new lifestyle as sport horses, show horses or all-around pleasure mounts.

(image) Canadian Olympian Jessica PhoenixCanadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix is a huge proponent of the “ex-racehorse” breed and has successfully worked with them for years. Two of her well-recognized horses in eventing - Exploring and Exponential - were off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTB) that successfully took Phoenix to top international levels of competition in eventing. “Exploring went to the Pam Am Games in 2007, and Exponential went to the Olympics and the Word Equestrian Games in 2010 and 2012,” says the Cannington, Ontario resident. “Exponential is such a tough horse. He’s 17 now and is still competing at the four-star level.”
