Lil Joe Cash and Andrea Fappani Lead NRHA Futurity Open


Wednesday was a busy day at the National Reining Horse Association Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show. As competitors battled it out in the final section of the $540,000-added NRHA Futurity Open and the Non-Pro Consolation round to earn a slot in the $260,000-added Cinch/NRHA Futurity Non-Pro finals, reining fans moved one step closer to crowning Futurity Champions at the 25th running of the event in Oklahoma City. (From 1966 to 1985 the NRHA Futurity was held in Columbus, Ohio.) 

Lil Joe Cash (Nu Chex To Cash x RS Lilly Starlight x Grays Starlight) ridden by Andrea Fappani for Russell Giles, Waco, Texas, marked a 223 in the first and second go-round to lead the $280,000-added Level 4 Open division with a composite score of 446. 

Easy Lil Lady (Easy Otie Whiz x Docs Lil Bullet x Lenas Gyrator), owned by Darling 888 Ranch, Princeton Ky., and ridden by Mike Boyle, moved to second place in the Level 4 Open division composite standings with a 444.5. 


The cut-off score for Level 4 Open finalists was a composite score of 435.5. Mike McEntire, Selma, N.C., will be riding three horses in the finals, including his All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity Champion Harley Surprize Lena (Hang Ten Surprize x Yuba Torima Lena x Solanos Yuba Lena), owned by The Harley Partnership. 

Andrea Fappani, Scottsdale, Ariz., Shawn Flarida, Springfield, Ohio, Craig Schmersal, Overbrook, Okla., Jordan Larson, Whitesboro, Texas and Tom McCutcheon, Aubrey, Texas, will ride two horses each in the clean slate finals! 

Holding their lead of the $145,000-added Level 3 Intermediate Open division was Cashn Rooster (Gallo Del Cielo x Booming Cash x Boomernic) ridden by Todd Crawford for Archie Mangus, Norman, Okla. The pair earned identical scores in the go-round (221.5) for a composite score of 443. Cashn Rooster also earned Crawford the $5,000 added Prime Time Open Futurity title. This Prime Time winner is determined by a handicapped composite score.

Level 3 Intermediate Open riders had to score a 432 to make their finals.

Gunner Boy (Colonels Smoking Gun [Gunner] x Kat Jordan x Nu Chex To Cash), ridden by Eduardo Salgado and owned by Jefferson Abbud, Brazil, maintained the top position in the $75,000-added Level 2 Limited Open and $35,000-added Level 1 Open divisions with a composite score of 441. Salgado and Gunner Boy qualified for all four divisions of the Futurity! 

A composite score of 427.5 earned a slot in the Level 2 and Level 1 finals. 

The NRHA Futurity Open finals, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, guarantees the Level 4 Open division Champion $150,000 as well as incredible prizes from NRHA Corporate Partners and award sponsors.

Futurity Non-Pro 

The Non-Pro Consolation round offered another opportunity for nearly 40 exhibitors to qualify for Friday’s NRHA / Cinch Non Pro Futurity clean slate finals. Earning the high Consolation score of 217.5, was Stephanie Porath, riding Robyn and George King’s Salt And Peppy Guy (SR Roosters Kid x Salt N Peppy Please x Chic Please). 

Porath will be riding against the best Non-Pros in the country. Mandy McCutcheon, Aubrey, Texas has three finalists, Jose Vazquez, Markham, Ill., Kelle Smith, Marietta, Okla., Tish Fappani, Scottsdale, Ariz., and Josiane Gauthier, Lucama, N.C., each have two Level 4 Non-Pro finalists! 

In order to make their clean slate finals, Non-Pros had to score a 214.5 in the $100,000-added Level 4 Non-Pro, a 213 in the $70,000-added Level 3 Intermediate Non-Pro, a 211.5 in the $55,000-added Level 2 Limited Non-Pro, a 211 in the $30,000-added Level 1 and a 215 for the $5,000-added Prime Time. 

The $100,000-added Open World Championship Shootout is slated for 7:30 p.m. Thursday evening in the Coliseum and will host the best of the best from around the world! 

Thursday is also the first of three days for reining’s premier horse sales: the NRHA / Markel Insurance Breeders Select, Marketplace and Futurity Prospect Sales. The sales start at 9:30 a.m. each morning in the Barn 3 Sale Arena.
