Bromont, May 21, 2012 – Dressage@Bromont gave Montreal young rider Mathilde Blais-Tétrault, Quebec’s representative at the 2011 North American Junior and Young Riders Championships (NAJYRC), a chance to be recognized for her performance.

A perfect weekend The 20 year-old young woman took first place in almost all the classes she competed in. Mathilde, who ranks amongst the five best young riders in North America, received a bursary for excellence and perseverance, offered jointly by Dressage International and Bromont Saint-Martin Hotel and suites.

FEI Inter 1: Quebec twice championIn the advanced division, St-Étienne de Lauzon rider Alain Provencher took the Champion title with Don Well and the Reserve Champion with Ricci.  

Kürs: a delight for spectators The presentation of the free style test on music, in the Omega Alpha ring, was an amazing event for visitors. They all warmly applauded all participants. In addition, in the FEI Young Riders, rider Tanya Strasser gave a remarkable performance, according to show organizer Linda Pepin, stating after the athlete’s performance: "Tanya’s choreography was outstanding. It is a performance which will inspire riders and dressage enthusiasts." She concluded: "When we see a performance of this quality, we realize that our Quebec riders are gaining in strength." 

Dressage riders will meet again at Dressage@Blainville on June 14, 15 and 16, at the Blainville Equestrian Park. The competition, a CDI***, will be the last international show on Canadian soil for selecting the Olympic team.

Dressage@Bromont: the momentum continues for junior riders

Bromont, May 20, 2012 – There was a slight turn of events in the Junior FEI competition today as the leading duo of Laurence Blais-Tétrault and Pissaro gave up first place to Montreal rider Naima Moreira and her partner Tolando, a ten year-old Dutch Warmblood.

A successful performance

Although Naima and her mount had the advantage today with a cumulative score of 70.537%, Laurence Blais-Tétrault is still leading the division after taking second and third place in today’s event with Lowelas and Pissaro, respectively.

Both riders, who trained under the guidance of Caroline Pepin and Albrecht Heidemann at Les écuries du ruisseau on the South shore, are moving closer to their goal: participate in the 2012 North American Junior and Young Riders Championships (NAJYRC) in Kentucky in the fall.

The young woman from Montreal leads in the FEI Young Riders division. Winner of a team medal at the 2011 NAJYRC, she is moving towards another participation in this prestigious competition.

Alain Provencher is first again

In the FEI Intermediate I division, after the Prix St-George, Quebec rider Alain Provencher maintained his lead, dominating with first place on Don Welle. Ontario rider Liz Steacie rounded up the top-three, taking second and third place with Luca LT and Sunset.

 The free-style tests to music (Kürs) take place on Monday May 21st in the Omega Alpha ring, starting at 2 o’clock. Entrance to the site costs $10 per vehicle.

U.S. Horse Slaughter Plants May Return Under New Bill

Under a federal funding bill signed Nov. 18 by President Barack Obama, the U.S. Department of Agriculture is once again permitted to inspect horse meat for human consumption, clearing the way for the return of horse slaughter plants in the U.S. The domestic horse processing industry has languished for five years, following a 2006 Congressional vote to strip USDA’s funding for horse meat inspection. Inspections continued on a fee-for-service basis until a lawsuit halted that practice in 2007. 

Horse slaughter plants are being considered in Montana, North Carolina, Oregon and other locations. State laws ban slaughtering horses for human consumption in Texas, Illinois, California and Florida, so plants can’t be located there, according to Dave Duquette, president of the nonprofit group United Horsemen, which has worked to restore horse processing. 

“There is a great deal of interest from investors, and someone is probably going to have a plant up and running in 60 to 90 days,” Duquette said. Having processing plants within American borders will spare horses the suffering of long trailer rides to slaughter facilities in Canada and Mexico, he added. “Ideally, we would like to have several plants open around the country so no horse would have to spend too much time on a trailer.” 

According to a 2011 report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), “from 2006 through 2010, U.S. horse exports for slaughter increased 148 percent to Canada and 660 percent to Mexico,” totaling about 100,000 per year, approximately the same number of horses slaughtered in the U.S. before the ban. 

The sharply divisive slaughter debate seized headlines again just after Thanksgiving, when the national news media took notice of the appropriations bill’s passage. Horse slaughter critics say the practice is inherently cruel, and horses, though classified by law as livestock, should be treated differently than customary food animals because of their unique relationship with humans. Slaughter proponents say the unintended consequence of closing the U.S. plants was an increase in the number of neglected and abandoned horses whose owners cannot afford their care, or find space for them in overflowing rescue facilities. 

“This issue always has been what is best for the horse and the horse industry. Our group has the compassion and the courage to do what’s best for the horse. The animal-rights groups seem to think the suffering of unwanted horses is just going to go away on its own. The GAO study and the events of the past five years prove that’s not true,” Duquette said.

In a surprise statement, the founder of one of the most vociferous opponents of horse slaughter, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), agreed with lifting the ban. Ingrid Newkirk told the Christian Science Monitor newspaper that the U.S. should never have banned slaughter because “the amount of suffering that it [the ban] created exceeded the amount of suffering it was designed to stop.”

Wednesday was a busy day at the National Reining Horse Association Futurity & Adequan® North American Affiliate Championship Show. As competitors battled it out in the final section of the $540,000-added NRHA Futurity Open and the Non-Pro Consolation round to earn a slot in the $260,000-added Cinch/NRHA Futurity Non-Pro finals, reining fans moved one step closer to crowning Futurity Champions at the 25th running of the event in Oklahoma City. (From 1966 to 1985 the NRHA Futurity was held in Columbus, Ohio.) 

Lil Joe Cash (Nu Chex To Cash x RS Lilly Starlight x Grays Starlight) ridden by Andrea Fappani for Russell Giles, Waco, Texas, marked a 223 in the first and second go-round to lead the $280,000-added Level 4 Open division with a composite score of 446. 

Easy Lil Lady (Easy Otie Whiz x Docs Lil Bullet x Lenas Gyrator), owned by Darling 888 Ranch, Princeton Ky., and ridden by Mike Boyle, moved to second place in the Level 4 Open division composite standings with a 444.5. 

Quebec’s François Lamontagne Wins 2011 Jump Canada Cup

Francois Lamontagne of St-Eustache, QC, won the 2011 Jump Canada Cup riding Unik Circa, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Sarah Lemieux.

In its inaugural season, the Jump Canada Cup was well received with almost 140 horse and rider combinations collecting points in 31 classes held across Canada. Designed to assist in the development of Canada’s up-and-coming Grand Prix stars, riders participating in the Jump Canada Cup competed over courses of up to 1.45m in height. Once all the points were tallied, three of the sport’s future stars topped the standings. 

Kicking-off the season in St. Lazare, QC, Lamontagne, 27, earned fourth place in the $10,000 Grand Prix at the Pépinière Horse Show and won the $25,000 Grand Prix at the St-Lazare Horse Show the following week with Unik Circa. At the Concours Hippiques du Parc—Printemps, the pair finished second in the $10,000 Tepq Qpet Grand Prix. During the Jumping Internationale de Blainville—Week 1, Lamontagne and Unik Circa were second in the $40,000 Grand Prix. The pair won the $15,000 Jump Canada Cup class during the second week of competition at the Jumping Internationale de Blainville. A 12th place finish in the last class of the season, the $60,000 Grand Prix of Rockwood at the Angelstone International Show Jumping Tournament, kept Lamontagne in the top spot to become the overall winner of the 2011 Jump Canada Cup with a total of 17,290 points. 

“If you look at the number of horses and riders who competed in the series, to win is quite an honour,” said Lamontagne, who rode Unik Circa in the Jump Canada Cup classes this season for owner Sarah Lemieux. “For a catch-ride, it was certainly nice to win the Jump Canada Cup with Unik Circa.” 

In a presentation held on Saturday, November 5, during the Royal Horse Show’s evening performance in Toronto, ON, Lamontagne received a $6,000 cash award from Jump Canada. 

Brian Morton, 25, of Langley, BC, earned 14,850 points to finish second the 2011 Jump Canada Cup riding Spitfire, a 14-year-old French-bred gelding owned by Linda Opdycke. As a result, Morton was awarded $4,000 by Jump Canada. 

Rounding out the top three in the Jump Canada Cup was Samantha Buirs, 24, of Langley, BC. Riding her 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Total Touch, Buirs earned 14,510 points throughout the season and was awarded $1,000 by Jump Canada. 

Christen and Gunner On Ice Lead Non Pro Futurity

The first go-round of the $540,000-added NRHA Open Futurity ended today at the 2011 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity & Adequan^® North American Affiliate Championship Show. The show also welcomed the Adequan^® North American Affiliate Limited Non Pro Championship. Reining fans can enjoy the show until December 3 at Oklahoma State Fair Park in Oklahoma City.

NRHA Four Million Dollar Rider Shawn Flarida and Smart Merada Rey remain tied for the high score in the $280,000-added level 4 open division with NRHA Million Dollar Rider Dell Hendricks and Cache Of Jewels.

Smart Merada Rey (Smart Shiner x Meradas Kitty Rey) is owned by Gaynia and Augustine Revenberg of Old Castle, Ontario, Canada. Flarida rode the gelding to the level 4 open reserve championship in the 2011 All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity.

Cache Of Jewels (Conquistador Whiz x Jewels Lil Sparkle) is owned by James Crews of Myakka, Fla. Hendricks and the stallion have already accumulated nearly $24,000 together so far in NRHA competition.

2010 NRHA Open Futurity Champion Jordan Larson rode Heritage Farm’s HF Mobster (Gunner x Dun Its Black Gold) to a score of 224 to end the go-round in third place.

Guapo Lena and Jay McLaughlin won the go-round in the $145,000-added level 3 open division. The Shiners Lena Doc stallion (out of Annies Nu Lena) is owned by Carol Rose of Gainesville, Tex. Nathan Piper and Kelly Hale’s A Little Flash O Fly marked a 222 for second place in the level 3 open division.

Brazilian rider Eduardo Salgado and Gunner Boy (Gunner x Kat Jordan) claimed the $75,000-added level 2 open and $35,000-added level 1 open divisions with a score of 220.5. Jefferson Abbud (Sao Paulo, Brazil) owns the Brazilian Quarter Horse stallion.

In the level 2 open division, there was a tie for second place with two scores of 220 – Garth Brown riding Jeffrey Palmer’s Showtimes Packinagun (Mister Nicadual x Showtimes Tinseltown) and Todd Wright riding Ernie Rodina’s Self Wrighteous (Self Shine x Im A Wright Off).  Wright and Self Wrighteous ended the go-round in second place in the level 1 open division also.

Open riders have one more go-round of competition before finalists are determined. The top horse and rider combinations, based on composite scores from the first and second go-round, will advance to the Open Futurity Finals on Saturday, December 3 where the winner of the level 4 open will earn a check for $150,000 as well as incredible prizes from NRHA Corporate Partners and award sponsors.

$260,000-Added NRHA / Cinch Non Pro Futurity
The $260,00-added NRHA / Cinch Non Pro Futurity entered the Oklahoma State Fair Park Coliseum today with the first section of the go-round. Frederick Christen (Whitehouse, Ohio) and Gunner On Ice (Gunner x Dancin For Joy) earned a 217.5 to lead the $100,000-added level 4 non pro division. Christen has won nearly $170,000 in NRHA competition including a third place finish on Gunner On Ice at the 2011 Scottsdale Classic Futurity.

In the $70,000-added level 3 non pro division, Dublin, Ohio’s Carlie Thompson rode her Crome Dont Corrode (Custom Crome x Maggie Chex) to a score of 216 for the lead. They come to the Futurity after winning the level 4 non pro division at the All American Quarter Horse Congress Futurity’s Congress Non Pro Reining Stakes. Thompson has nearly $145,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings.

Allison Sutton (Gainesville, Tex.) and Whiz N Chexy Chic lead the level 2 non pro and level 1 non pro division with a score of 215. Gary Sutton owns the Topsail Whiz mare out of Tinky Chex Chic. Allison placed fourth in the level 2 non pro division at the 2008 NRHA Futurity.

Breanna Van Der Schaaf Wins Adequan NAAC Limited Non Pro
South Central region qualifiers Breanna Van Der Schaaf (Richmond, Tex.) and Hes At Bat (Rowdy Yankee x Rambos Smart N Smoke) marked a 219.5 to win the Adequan NAAC Limited Non Pro championship. The pair recently won the level 3 open division in the 7 & Up Derby at the 2011 NRHA Derby. Van Der Schaaf has nearly $40,000 in NRHA LTE and Hes At Bat has more than $54,000 in NRHA LTE.

Dressage Canada: Augustin and Christine Walch Named Owner of the Year

Dressage Canada is pleased to announce that Christine and Augustin Walch of W. Charlot Farms in Stratford, ON,have been named as the 2011 Dressage Canada Owner(s) of the Year.

The Walchs are the co-owners of Viva's Salieri W, a 10-year-old Canadian-bred Hanoverian stallion that represented Canada at the 2011 Pan American Games with Tom Dvorak of Hillsburgh, ON.

Born at W. Charlot Farms, Viva’s Salieri W, sired by Viva Voltaire, has been in training with Dvorak since he was a four-year-old. In 2011, the pair easily qualified to represent Canada at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Aboard Viva’s Salieri W, Dvorak, 46, was the highest placed Canadian dressage rider at the Games, placing fourth in the individual competition. The duo was an integral part of Canada’s team silver medal which also qualified the Canadian dressage team for the 2012 London Olympics.

“Augustin and Christine Walch are very supportive and have trusted us to care for and train Viva's Salieri W as if he were our own,” said Dvorak. “He is a special horse. Everyday he is ready to give 110 per cent and I love riding him.”

“We are absolutely thrilled about Salieri’s success and the recognition we received from Dressage Canada,” said Christine Walch. “It is every breeders dream to breed a horse that can compete at the international level, and what we achieved this year in the dressage arena is simply a dream come true. We are very grateful for the wonderful job that Tom and Ellen Dvorak have done with ‘Socks.’ His success would not have been possible without them.”

She added, “Both Augustin and I were very touched when we received the message from Dressage Canada about the award.”

The Walchs were recognized at the Dressage Canada 2011 Celebration of Dressage held November 10th at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON.

Past winners of the Dressage Canada Owner of the Year Award include Karen Soupcoff (2003), Deryol Andrews (2004), Evi Strasser (2005), Doug Leatherdale (2006), Faith Berghuis (2007), Ian and Moreen Nicoll (2008), Robyn Eames (2009) and Cindy Ishoy (2010).

Calgary’s Jonathan Asselin Top Canadian at Pan American Games

Jonathan Asselin of Calgary, AB, finished ninth individually while Eric Lamaze of Schomberg, ON, placed 11th in show jumping competition held Saturday, October 29, at the XVI Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. Asselin, 52, was sitting 16th coming into Saturday’s individual show jumping final at the Guadalajara Country Club. In the first round of competition, Asselin guided Showgirl, an 11-year-old chestnut Selle Français mare owned by Attaché Stables, to a clear jumping round, incurring one time fault for exceeding the time allowed. Competitors had 80 seconds to complete the beautifully-decorated course set by designer Javier Fernandez of Mexico.

Returning for the second round, Asselin was clear all the way until the last obstacle, the 2015 Toronto Pan American Games fence. The four faults he incurred gave Asselin a final individual score of 16.10 penalties and ninth place overall in his Pan American Games debut.

“Jonathan had a wonderful day, his horse jumped exceptionally well,” said Terrance Millar, chef d’équipe of the Canadian Show Jumping Team. “In the last round, the horse was jumping beautifully but his bit actually broke in half with three jumps left to go. There was a long canter to the last jump, a fairly simple vertical, and the mare had it down.”

International Bromont : the closing weekend

Bromont, July 28th, 2011 – On the eve of its final weekend, the International Bromont is ready for three days of memorable equine events.

Starting on Friday July 29^th, FEI riders will cumulate points for their world rankings, with the 1m50 event, immediately followed by the Canadian Equestrian Team (CET) Medal class.

The CET Medal class, presented by Burkman Capital, Burkman Capital, promotes the development of the young upcoming riders so they can reach the sports’ highest levels. In that event of two phases, over fence and on the flat, riders must not only demonstrate control of their horse, but also style and dexterity as the judge evaluates their equitation.

On Saturday July 30^th, the International Bromont reiterates its innovations with the Hit and Hurry class. Riders will have to jump as many obstacles possible in the time allowed, where there are no time or jumping faults: the difference is that riders do not need to do a course in a certain time, but rather jump as many obstacles they can before the bell rings the end of the countdown. Each fence jumped clear is worth two points and only one point when a bar falls. Who wins? The rider with the most points will. 

Following the Hit and Hurry, international level riders will compete in the Modified Grand Prix of Saturday. Technically as difficult as a traditional Grand Prix, the Modified Grand Prix with lower fences, gives high-level riders the opportunity to test their young horses’ Grand Prix potential.

The International Bromont will end on Sunday July 31^st with the Grand Prix event. The most sought after event of the competition with its total prize money of $125,000, the Grand Prix is the highlight of the International Bromont. FEI sanctioned riders will see it as their last chance, in this 36^th edition, to win points towards their world rankings.

The International Bromont, with its novel attractions and revised programming, is eagerly awaiting visitors for two weeks of unequalled competitions in Quebec.

Canadian Show Jumping Team Announced for Spanish Tour

Jill Henselwood, Eric Lamaze, Chris Pratt and Jenna Thompson will represent the Canadian Show Jumping Team at CSIO5* Gijon, ESP, from August 31 to September 5, and in the FEI Promotional League Nations’ Cup Final at CSIO5* Barcelona, ESP, from September 21–25. The Spanish tour is made possible through Sport Canada’s ‘Own the Podium’ program, a national sport technical initiative designed to help Canada’s summer and winter athletes achieve podium success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

2008 Olympic team silver medalist Jill Henselwood, 48, of Oxford Mills, ON, has declared George, a nine-year-old Hanoverian gelding owned by Brian Gingras, as her mount for the Spanish tour.

Olympic Champion Eric Lamaze, 43, of Schomberg, ON, has declared two horses owned by Torrey Pines Stable and Artisan Farms, LLC for the Spanish tour. Currently ranked number one in the Rolex World Rider Rankings, Lamaze will take Coriana Van Klapscheut, a nine-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare, and Sidoline Van de Centaur, a nine-year-old Belgian Sport Horse mare.

Chris Pratt, 42, formerly of Belfountain, ON, and now residing in Valencia, California, has declared three horses. They are Cruise, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Indigo Farms LLC; G5, a 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Indigo Farms and Susan Geliebter; and Grandula, a 12-year-old Westphalian mare owned by Brookwood Stables.

Making her third consecutive appearance on the Spanish Tour, Jenna Thompson, 23, of Calgary, AB, has declared two horses, Zeke, a 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding, and Cathleen, a 10-year-old Hannoverian mare. Thompson owns both horses.

“I am looking forward to returning to Spain this year,” said Mark Laskin of Langley, BC, who will act as Canadian Show Jumping Team chef d’équipe for Gijon and Barcelona, aided by stable manager Darren Roberts. “We have a veteran group of riders with some inexperienced horses, so this tour will be extremely beneficial in their development.”

Laskin continued, “Gijon is a fantastic venue, an elite Nations’ Cup and a great warm-up for the Promotional League Final in Barcelona. With this mix of riders and horses, I am optimistic about our prospects for yet another great result.”

In 2010, the Canadian Show Jumping Team placed second in the €60,000 Nations’ Cup competition at CSIO5* Gijon and third at the €90,000 FEI Nations’ Cup Promotional League Final at CSIO5* Barcelona.

A Nations’ Cup is the only competition in show jumping where riders, in teams of four, compete as a country. The top three scores from each team are counted towards the final result of the two-round competition.

There are only two Nations’ Cup events held annually in North America. The $350,000 BMO Nations’ Cup at the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ Tournament in September and the $75,000 FEI Nations’ Cup at the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, in March.

Canadian Show Jumping Riders Named for North American Junior and Young Rider Championships

Jump Canada has announced the show jumping athletes that will represent Canada at the 2011 Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Riders’ Championship. Presented by Gotham North, these Championships will be held July 27–31 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. Team and individual honours will be awarded in two divisions for show jumping, Junior (open to riders aged 14 to 18) and Young Riders’ (for riders aged 16-21).

The chef d’équipes include Hyde Moffat for the Ontario Junior and Young Riders’ teams, Jim Ifko for the Alberta Junior Team, Jay Duke Alberta Young Riders’ Team, Nicole Lapierre for the Quebec Young Riders’ Individual and Christine Dejordy for the Quebec Junior Rider individual.

In 2010, the Alberta Junior Show Jumping Team won the gold medal in the Junior division while Ben Asselin of Calgary, AB, won the individual gold medal in the Young Riders’ division aboard Lolita.

2011 Horse Sport Young Riders' Scholarship

Horse Sport is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications for the 2011 Horse Sport Young Riders' Scholarship worth $5,000.

Horse Sport has long been dedicated to supporting Canada's up-and-coming riders and their equestrian aspirations. The Horse Sport Young Riders' Scholarship Fund was established in 1998 as part of Horse Sport's 30th anniversary celebration. Each year since, the top Canadian riders at the North American Young Riders' Championship in dressage, show jumping and eventing were awarded a cash prize toward their pursuits. The format of the Scholarship changed in 2010 and now rewards a single deserving Canadian young rider with a $5,000 Scholarship.

"I am very proud of our history of supporting Canada's young riders. These talented and dedicated equestrians are the future of our sport and are much deserving of our help," said Horse Sport publisher Jennifer Anstey. "This Scholarship is certainly a rewarding way of giving back to the industry that is our passion and main focus."

The Scholarship aims to provide meaningful financial assistance to support the equestrian ambitions of the next generation. Applicants should describe why they are deserving of this money, how it will be put to use and the impact that it might have on their equestrian pursuits.

To enter, please make sure you meet the Eligibility Criteria and submit your application by September 30, 2011. The winner will be announced in the December 2011 issue of Horse Sport.

Eligibility Criteria
• Canadian citizen
• 16 through 21 years of age in 2011.
• Must be enrolled in secondary or post-secondary school
• Competed in jumping, dressage or eventing competitions for the last three consecutive years
• Previous winners are not eligible

• Name of school and contact person
• 700 - 1000 word essay on why you feel you deserve $5,000. Some topics that you may consider covering are: history with horses, level of accomplishment, volunteer work, educational accomplishments and future goals.
• You may choose to support your essay with up to five photographs and/or a digital video no more than 5 minutes long.
List the name of one show for each of the last three years that you have entered, the division you showed in and any placings earned.
• Submit by 12 pm EST on September 30, 2011

‘Take two’ at the International Bromont

Bromont, July 27^th, 2011 – The International Bromont enters its second week of competition eager to raise the bar even higher.

“The number of visitors we had today (Wednesday July 27), bode well for the success of the second week,” contends show manager Roger Deslauriers. “We saw a lot of traffic for a week day, and are expecting to welcome a lot of spectators for our weekend line-up”, further explains the man who has been the show’s lifeline since the beginning.

Today’s classes may not count in the world ranking of participants; however, they still allow them to accumulate points towards the Champion and Champion Reserve titles in each division, from 1m to 1m40.

Riders participating at the international level are still busy, as a number of them have different horses entered in this week’s classes, as is the case for François Lamontagne, today’s winner of the 1m25 event.

High level riders will have to pass the jog test once again on Thursday, in anticipation of the FEI events of the weekend, namely the 1m50 on Friday July 29^th and the Grand Prix on the closing Sunday July 31^st. Riders in both events are eligible to win points towards their Fédération Équestre Internationale’s rankings.

The International Bromont is also the place to visit the co-op members of the ‘Marché du Terroir’, for the last weekend, while young and old can discover the equine world at the Equus Pocus tent.

The International Bromont, with its novel attractions and revised programming, is eagerly awaiting visitors for two weeks of unequalled competitions in Quebec.

Bromont, July 26^th, 2011 – On the eve of its second week of competition, the International Bromont is working overtime in order to end its 36^th edition in a blaze of glory.

“Riders are delighted with their first week”, according to show manager Roger Deslauriers, “All courses were challenging and the weather cooperated. We could not have asked for more,” concludes the man who has been behind the event since the beginning.  

New riders will join us for the second week of competition at the International Bromont, which starts on Wednesday and formally ends next Sunday, July 31^st.

A show worth seeing

The International Bromont features classes for all levels in both Hunter and Jumper divisions, as well as events of international calibre. On Friday July 29^th, riders will be in contention for points that will affect their world ranking, in a class at 1M50.   

On the last Sunday, July 31^st, riders will compete on a course designed by Jean-Paul Lepetit in the Grand Prix at 1M60, with a total of $125,000 in prize money to share.

New attractions at the International Bromont

The International Bromont provides visitors with a variety of new attractions for its 36^th edition. Not only can they enjoy outstanding competitions, but they also have the opportunity to discover local farmers at the Country Market, for the final weekend.

The ‘Marché du Terroir’, a co-op of agricultural producers from the Montérégie and the Eastern Townships, offers a nice selection of local products. “It is an attraction intended specifically for the general public”, explains Sophie Chagnon, operations manager, before adding, “Evidently, our participants also benefit from the market, but we had our visitors in mind when we initially planned it”. 

Amongst its many firsts this year, the International Bromont invites spectators to an entirely new event, the Hit and Hurry, scheduled for Saturday July 30^th. In this class, riders must jump as many obstacles as possible to accumulate the highest number of points, as the clock counts down; consequently, there are no over fence or time faults. This new event will certainly be a thrill.

Henselwood triomphant in Bromont!

Bromont, July 24^th, 2011 – As the sole participant to complete the course in a clear round, Canadian Jill Henselwood leaves with a well-deserved victory in the BonjourQuébec.com World Cup event!

The first week of the International Bromont ended on a high note, as a significant and enthusiastic crowd came to the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park to enjoy two exceptional events: the novel Royal Canin Challenge and the BonjourQuébec.com World Cup.

The Royal Canin Challenge was largely successful with the visitors. The crowd cheered and applauded the performances of dogs from the ‘Club d’agilité Montérégie’, who were paired with riders of the International Bromont, for this unique event.   The team of Nova Scotia Danica Ellis and Ujo, a Belgian Sheepdog won with a combined time of 60.72 seconds.

The Cup goes to the female gender!
For the last event of this first week, course designer Venezualan Leopoldo Palacios out did himself. The course of 17 jumps (14 obstacles including a double and triple combination), was a challenge for the riders. Only Canadian Jill Henselwood, team silver medalist at the last Olympic Games, successfully managed the course with a clear round thus earning victory. Second and third place went respectively to American Leslie Howard and Russian Liubov Kochetova.

Even without a jump-off, the BonjourQuébec.com World Cup event was still thrilling. The crowd cheered on Mario Deslauriers as he entered the ring, while his unfortunate 12 faults quite frustrated his fans. Every one of them wished that Mario would leave with the title. 

With this first Sunday, International Bromont riders will get a couple of days off before starting the competition again next Wednesday, July 27^th.
